The Outcomes

In April 2023, the Utopia Youth Exchange brought together 39 participants from nine different countries, to create their perfect world as they would like to see it. They started the exchange in 4 smaller groups, each with their own privileges and disadvantages. Throughout the program, participants faced various challenges, while having no phone, no own money and they had to manage a daily budget themselves, including shopping, preparing and cooking their own food.

We measured the impact through surveys on the participants at two moments; one moment on the last day of the exchange and the other moment two months after the exchange. Here, we share the outcomes of the exchange and its impact on the participants.

See the long-term impact of the Utopia Youth Exchange through participants' testimonials here.

Developing Life Skills

Participants were immersed in an environment where they had to manage daily budgets, cook their meals, clean and handle various tasks without personal phones or money. This hands-on experience equipped them with essential life skills and self-reliance, fostering a sense of responsibility.

Practicing Communication and Cooperation

There wasn’t a moment during the day in which the participants were not working together. Although not the primary focus, communication skills were practiced in group activities, such as creating shopping lists, preparing meals, cooperating in games and finding solutions to certain challenges. These interactions highlighted each participant's strengths and weaknesses, leading to increased self-awareness and improved group dynamics.

Initiative and Leadership

Utopia emphasized taking initiative, pushing participants to lead and express their own needs and desires. While some were initially passive, most participants learned the value of asserting themselves and taking charge. We believe that all youngsters challenged themselves and learnt a great new set of skills and competences which will benefit them for the future.

Accountability and Personal Growth

Participants left Utopia feeling more accountable for their actions and motivated to work towards their Utopian ideals. Their day to day tasks and challenges, all encouraged them to take ownership of their roles and decisions, especially when they found themselves in difficult situations. This newfound responsibility instilled a sense of purpose, encouraging them to take charge not only in the context of Utopia but also in their own lives beyond the program. As a result, they left the exchange with a deeper commitment to making their Utopian ideals a reality, armed with the understanding that their actions could shape a “better world”, both individually and collectively. The exchange's emphasis on self-reliance and responsibility spurred personal growth and maturity.

Cultural Exchange and Collaboration

Mixed international groups and cultural evenings allowed participants to appreciate diversity and learn to work with people from vastly different backgrounds. These experiences broadened their horizons and strengthened their cross-cultural communication skills.

Empowering dreams
The exchange wasn't just about abstract ideals; it actively encouraged participants to take concrete steps towards creating their own Utopia. This process nurtured a sense of empowerment and determination. Participants left Utopia with the confidence that they had the capacity and ability to shape their own destinies, breaking free from the constraints of their past and actively working towards their envisioned futures. The experience was the beginning for transforming dreams into actionable goals.

Digital Detox

During the Utopia exchange, participants were intentionally disconnected from the digital world, as they were deprived of access to phones and the internet throughout the program. This "digital detox" had a significant impact on their experience, fostering a deeper connection with their fellow participants and revealing the extent of their ability to function without the constant distractions of the online world.

By living without their smartphones and the internet, participants were liberated from the usual barrage of notifications, social media, and other digital distractions. This allowed them to be fully present in the moment and engage more deeply with one another. Without the option of retreating into the digital world, they had to rely on face-to-face interactions and genuine human connections, which reinforced their capacity to connect on a human level.

The absence of phones and the internet not only enabled participants to develop stronger bonds but also taught them valuable lessons about self-sufficiency and adaptability. They realized that they could solve problems, make decisions, and communicate effectively without the constant reliance on technology.

Building Lifelong Friendships

Utopia not only provided valuable life skills but also created deep, lasting connections among participants. New friendships were created, far in distance but near to the heart.

"I gained independence while traveling after outdoor experience, any crazy situation that happens to us can be solved especially with your phone and some money. In situations that exchanges give us I started appreciate teamwork, and I saw that we can definitely benefit from it. Didn’t really happen to me before. "The environment and setup of the exchange gave me a lot of practical skills that I notice using in my everyday life. Currently I live alone and I need to budget my own groceries, utilities and personal wished. The experience of budgeting in Utopia has been imprinted in me and I use the lessons that I got in there do to my budgeting quite successfully. I have managed to keep my spending even under my budget and get everything that I need and this is exactly because of the lessons in living in different social classes."

"The strongest impact Utopia has for me was definitely the feeling of the real world, without phone, money, etc. I felt strongly connected to people, nature, to myself. I had a strong fear of the future, but it seems it is all gone after the project. I learned that you can survive everything if you have lovely people around and positive energy. Also I learned that everybody can be lovely if you give them a chance!"
